I made this little tote bag last summer for my little one for her to carry her dance stuff into class. Can you believe it was made from a placemat that I came across at the $dollar store last summer. Of course they had green and teal too. So I did pick up those colors too but never made any bags out of them. The pink one just looked like a tote bag to me. So that’s what it became.
It cost me literally just $2 dollars to make this little bag.
I already had the faux suede that I used for the straps and the magnetic snap closure too. There was really no need to line the inside of the bag since the edges where already finished.
- 2 placemats
- faux suede or any scrap fabric will do. Cut 2 22 x 3 for your straps
- Magnetic snap closure
- thread, scissors, sewing machine
Place your placemats together right sides facing and stitch up the sides and along the bottom edge. Cut a 2 x 2 square out of each corner. Stitch across the corners to make a triangle. This makes the bottom of your bag and helps it stand on its own. Attach snap and straps. Now turn your bag right side out and its complete.

This project went together very quickly and easily… Great for someone who wants to learn to sew.
