I’ve been sewing! Woo hoo! I’m so in love with this simple summer skirt. They are so quick and easy to make for any little Drama Queen. I made this one with the same coordinating fabric for the bottom ruffle but you can also use a contrasting fabric and it will be oh so cute. I just love yellow for summer time.
This skirt is for a 5 to 6-year-old. You can adjust your measurements by measuring around your little ones waist and adding 5″ for gathering.
- Cut two pieces of fabric for the top of your skirt~ 20″ by 9″
- The bottom ruffle is 40″ by 4″ cut 2
- I like to overlock the edges of my 4 fabric pieces
- Increased the stitch length on your machine ( mine goes to 4 ) and make a running stitch along the 2 bottom pieces or fabric. Leave some long tails of thread for pulling up the stitches for gathering.
- Adjust your gathers to fit onto the top of the skirt.
- With right sides together pin in place and stitch them together with your machine set at a normal stitch length. Repeat with other two pieces of the skirt.
- Iron your seam up towards the top of the skirt and topstitch into place.
- Place back and front of skirt together with right sides facing each other. Stitch up the sides making sure to match the seams.
- I like to overlock the edges.
- Sew down enough width along the top of the skirt to thread your elastic through. Leave a small opening for the elastic. Once elastic is threaded though and evened out topstitch opening closed.
- I really liked the way the overlocked edge looked on the bottom hem so I just left it.
It’s been super busy around our house the past two weeks. Kid’s were sick, I was sick, planted a garden, baseball games, dance lessons, and my birthday. Which I hated turning another year older.
Anyway, I hope you like this simple summer skirt and give it a try. Let me know if you have any questions and I’ll do my best to help you.
Have a great day…

Looks great! My sewing machine’s a bit more simple than yours by the sound of things, but will still give this a go and let you know how I get on. Thanks for the guide!
