Simple Summer Skirt

I’ve been sewing!  Woo hoo!  I’m so in love with this simple summer skirt.  They are so quick and easy to make for any little Drama Queen.   I made this one with the same coordinating fabric for the bottom ruffle but you can also use a contrasting fabric and it will be oh so cute.  I just love yellow for summer time.

This skirt is for a 5 to 6-year-old.  You can adjust your measurements by measuring around your little ones waist and adding 5″ for gathering.

  1. Cut two pieces of fabric for the top of your skirt~ 20″ by 9″
  2. The bottom ruffle is 40″ by 4″ cut 2
  3. I like to overlock the edges of my 4 fabric pieces
  4. Increased the stitch length on your machine ( mine goes to 4 ) and make a running stitch along the 2 bottom pieces or fabric.  Leave some long tails of thread for pulling up the stitches for gathering.
  5. Adjust your gathers to fit onto the top of the skirt.
  6. With right sides together pin in place and stitch them together with your machine set at a normal stitch length.  Repeat with other two pieces of the skirt.
  7. Iron your seam up towards the top of the skirt and topstitch into place.
  8. Place back and front of skirt together with right sides facing each other.  Stitch up the sides making sure to match the seams.
  9. I like to overlock the edges.
  10. Sew down enough width along the top of the skirt to thread your elastic through. Leave a small opening for the elastic.  Once elastic is threaded though and evened out topstitch opening closed.
  11. I really liked the way the overlocked edge looked on the bottom hem so I just left it.

It’s been super busy around our house the past two weeks.  Kid’s were sick, I was sick, planted a garden, baseball games, dance lessons, and my birthday.  Which I hated turning another year older.

Anyway, I hope you like this simple summer skirt and give it a try.  Let me know if you have any questions and I’ll do my best to help you.

 Have a great day…

  1. Looks great! My sewing machine’s a bit more simple than yours by the sound of things, but will still give this a go and let you know how I get on. Thanks for the guide!
